Carmelo Anthony Trade Revisited – Where Are They Now?

facebooktwitterreddit

With Carmelo Anthony shutting it down for the season, figured it would be a great time to revisit the players that New York shipped off in the blockbuster trade that brought Anthony to the Knicks. New York had to gut their team to acquire Anthony, trading half their team away to do so. We take a look at where all these ex-Knicks now stand, and most interesting is that now all the draft picks has also played out.

Eddy Curry

Already having deteriorated to the point of being unplayable due to weight issues by the time the trade occurs, Eddy Curry was quickly bought out by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Curry since then has essentially been out of the league, playing only a combined 108 minutes in his short stints with the Miami Heat in the 2011-2012 season and the Dallas Mavericks the following season.

Anthony Randolph

More from Daily Knicks

Traded away as a third-year project player with potential upside, Anthony Randolph showed signs of meeting that potential immediately with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Randolph averaged 11.7 points and 5.2 rebounds for the remainder of the 2010-2011 season, but would regress the following season. After Randolph’s rookie contract expired, he was reunited with his old pals from New York, signing with the Denver Nuggets in the summer of 2012. Never realizing his potential, averaging only 4.3 points and 2.6 rebounds in his time in Denver, Randolph was again in another package trade. This time to the Chicago Bulls, but within a month time, Randolph would again be traded to the Orlando Magic, who immediately waived him the next day. Currently Randolph is playing with Russia’s Lokomotiv Kuban.

Danilo Gallinari

Danilo Gallinari was having his best NBA season in his career in 2012-2013, averaging 16.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assist, before ending the season tragically with an ACL injury. The injury sidelined Gallinari’s entire 2013-2014 season, and has not been the same since his return from the injury this season.

Wilson Chandler

Wilson Chandler has been the most consistent player Denver received from the Anthony blockbuster trade. Chandler is averaging 13.3 points and 5.2 rebounds in five seasons with the Nuggets. Replacing an offensive star like Carmelo Anthony is very difficult, and Chandler has filled in well, even improving his three-point shooting since his departure from New York. In the 2012-2013 season Chandler shot a career high 41.3% from beyond the arc.

Raymond Felton

We all forget now, but Raymond Felton was having an All-Star year before being dealt in the blockbuster trade. Felton prior to the trade was averaging 17.1 points and 9 assists per game. Denver moved on from Felton on Draft night, sending him to the Portland Trail Blazers, where the world got the infamous Felton cupcake picture. Felton had a poor season, with much talk centered on his weight gain.

Then New York traded for Felton upon hearing the Houston Rocket’s offer sheet for Jeremy Lin. This was New York essentially saying we are not matching and we already have Lin’s replacement. Unfortunately Felton was never able to regain his near All-Star form when he first departed in the blockbuster Anthony trade. Even more unfortunate is that his second tenure with New York will most likely be remembered for his arrest on gun charges. Felton would agree to take a plea deal in the summer to avoid any jail time, where he was sentenced to 500 hours of community service and ordered to pay a $5,000 fine. Felton was traded with Tyson Chandler, in a deal that reunited Chandler with his 2011 Championship team. Felton has yet to make an impact on the Dallas Mavericks, being sidelined with an ankle injury for most of the season.

Timofey Mozgov

Most famous for a Knick’s moment that created a new verb in the urban dictionary, Timofey Mozgov did not make much of an impact in his time with Denver, only averaging 6.8 points and 5.2 rebounds in five seasons.

On January 7, 2015, Mozgov was traded, along with a 2015 second-round pick, to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for two protected 2015 first-round picks (via Oklahoma City and Memphis). Since the acquisition of Mozgov and the return of LeBron James, the Cavaliers have been 14-5, highlighted by a 12 game winning streak.

  • Mozgov has greatly improved Cleveland’s rebounding, going from the sixth worst team in the category at 41.2 rebounds per game, to the a top four team in rebounding since the Mozgov trade at 45.9 rebounds per game, as per NBA.com. Another category that Cleveland is now top four in is points per game, since the trade the Cavaliers are scoring 105.5 points compared to 100.2 points prior to the trade. However, where Cleveland still needs to improve in is on the defensive end, even with Mozgov anchoring the defense the Cavaliers only improved only by 1.1 points per game. Cleveland went from the 18th defense in the league to the 15th. Now to be fair, the improvement of the Cavaliers is not solely because of Mozgov, Cleveland in the same time period also acquired J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert, so they too have a helping hand in the turn around.

    2012 Draft Pick: Quincy Miller

Denver Nuggets drafted Quincy Miller (from Golden State via New York). Miller has scored a grand total of 283 points in his career so far. On October 27, 2014, Miller was waived by the Nuggets. Miller signed two 10-day contracts with the Sacramento Kings from mid-January on. Upon the expiration of those contracts Miller now plays for the Sacramento’s D-League affiliate team, the Reno Bighorns.

    2013 Draft Pick: Romero Osby

Denver Nuggets packaged New York’s second round pick to help facilitate the blockbuster trade that sent Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers in the summer of 2012. New York’s second round pick ended up being the 51th selection of the draft, Orlando selected Romero Osby. Osby was signed and waived by the Magic before the 2013-2014 season even began. Osby played for Boston’s D-League affiliate team, the Maine Red Claws during the 2013-2014 season, and went overseas briefly before returning to the Red Claws on February 5, 2015.

    2014 Draft Pick: Dario Saric

Again the Dwight Howard trade, the pick ended up being the 12th overall selection in the draft, Orlando Magic drafted Dario Saric. Later in the night The Philadelphia 76ers traded the rights to Elfrid Payton for the rights of Dario Saric. Saric was recently named FIBA European Young Player of the Year averaging 9.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assist per game on 23.27 minutes. Keep in mind that the international games are ten minute quarters.
