The NBA world was rocked on Monday when ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Warriors GM and president Bob Myers was stepping down from his duties. Earlier this year when reports began to surface that Myers’ extension talks with the Warriors weren’t gaining traction, the New York Knicks were identified as one of the possible teams that could go after Myers.

Woj wrote that Myers is “unsure of his future professional pathway” but that if he decides to return to a team, he’d be one of “the most pursued executives in modern North America professional sports history.” The 48-year-old was named executive of the year twice and was part of the Warriors’ dynasty that included four championships in eight seasons.

With Myers’ departure, part of the Knicks fanbase has started to dream about what the organization’s front office would look like with Myers in it. Leon Rose has been New York’s president since 2020 and that’s a role that he’s done well in (thanks again for Jalen Brunson!), and even for an executive with the resume that Myers has, it’d be hard to see James Dolan and the Knicks moving on from Rose.

Bob Myers leaving Warriors has Knicks fans wondering about Leon Rose’s future

When comparing Bob Myers and Leon Rose to one another, there’s no question about which executive has enjoyed more success. The Warriors went from being nothing more than a small market team to consistently being one of the best, if not the best, team in the league over the 11 seasons that Myers spent in Golden State.

Depending on what Myers wants for his future, which could simply include him taking some time off, Rose would have to massively screw up for the Knicks to consider replacing him. Along with the Brunson signing, the organization has drafted well since Rose took over, most notably by selecting players like Immanuel Quickley and Quentin Grimes.

Myers doesn’t have experience trading for a superstar, which is Rose’s next move. He passed on Donovan Mitchell last summer after Danny Ainge wanted the entire Knicks farm, which is a move that winded up paying off during the postseason. Myers did bring a superstar to the Warriors in free agency in 2016 when Kevin Durant signed with Golden State.

As Woj noted, Bob Myers will be highly sought after if (or when) he decides to return to a front office somewhere around the league. As of right now, though, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be with the Knicks. Let Leon cook!
