What does the future hold for Knicks’ second-round pick Trevor Keels?
The New York Knicks have been one of the best stories in the NBA. The team went on a nine-game win streak recently and are three games behind the Cleveland Cavaliers for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.
While there really isn’t much to complain about right now if you’re a Knicks fan, there is a story that has kind of been swept under the rug: The ‘tossing around’ so to speak of rookie guard Trevor Keels.
New York selected the Duke product in the second round of the 2022 draft with the 42nd overall pick. He was originally signed to a two-way contract but never really saw any time with the team and became a mainstay with the G League affiliate Westchester Knicks.
On Feb. 8 when the Knicks sent a package of players to Portland for Josh Hart, a couple of roster spots opened up that the team had to fill. The orange and blue would proceed to call up Keels as well as fellow two-way player DaQuan Jeffries for a small period of time.
Later, on Feb. 23, Leon Rose elected to sign the 19-year-old to a 10-day contract. Trevor appeared in one game against the Brooklyn Nets on Mar. 1 where he scored his first NBA basket and collected one rebound. After his contract expired, New York elected to not sign Keels to another 10-day, therefore releasing him.
What’s next for Knicks’ 2022 second-round pick Trevor Keels?
While Trevor Keels is in fact back in Connecticut to play for the Westchester Knicks, the New York Knicks organization no longer has the rights to him. Since the Clinton, Maryland native was not signed to a second contract, any NBA team has the right to claim Keels and place him on their active roster.
We’ve seen this before when the Milwaukee Bucks signed former Seton Hall guard Myles Powell to their team from Westchester back in March of 2021.
Trevor Keels has only played in two NBA games so far in his career, and while there’s a good chance we see him again this season, it could very well not be in a New York Knicks uniform.
