NBA Rumors: Latest report speculates extension Knicks’ Immanuel Quickley could sign
Fans are eager to know if one of the New York Knicks’ offseason moves will be signing Immanuel Quickley to an extension. After the Knicks picked up his fourth-year option earlier this season, he’ll be extension-eligible on July 1.
The 23-year-old has made quite the leap in his third season in New York. He’s averaging a career-high 13.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and nearly one steal in 28.2 minutes. He’s shooting a career-high 44.7% from the field and 36.4% from three. Quickley’s been the spark off the bench that the Knicks have needed, which has led to him being one of the frontrunners for the Sixth Man of the Year award.
Quickley stole the show on national television in the Knicks’ 131-129 double-overtime win over the Celtics on Sunday. With Jalen Brunson out, Quickley slid into the starting lineup and finished with a career-high 38 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and only one turnover in 55 minutes. New York’s winning streak would’ve ended at eight if it weren’t for Quickley.
Will Knicks sign guard Immanuel Quickley to an extension this summer?
A couple of months ago, the Knicks were reportedly listening to trade offers for Immanuel Quickley. Thank goodness nothing ever came of that. Instead, fans may get their wishes granted during the offseason with a Quickley extension.
ESPN’s Bobby Marks spoke to New York Post’s Zach Braziller in a phone interview about a Quickley extension. The cap guru said:
"“He’s a hard one. You want more of a body of work playing big minutes. [Sunday] night was beyond big minutes,” ESPN salary cap guru Bobby Marks, the former Nets executive, said in a phone interview. “But at the end of the day, where does he fall into the pecking order of Brunson, you still have [Julius] Randle, [RJ] Barrett’s contract hasn’t started yet, eventually [Quentin] Grimes. You want to prioritize cap space certainly in 2024. I think he’s a priority for New York, but I don’t think he’s a July 1 priority.”"
Marks said that Quickley likely won’t receive an extension similar to what Tyler Herro (four-year, $130 million) and Jordan Poole (four-year, $140 million) signed last year, but Marks did guess that IQ could sign an extension similar to what De’Andre Hunter (four-year, $95 million) signed with the Hawks in October. That sounds about right.
With the front office still waiting to make their big move by trading for a star or signing one in free agency, Quickley could give Leon Rose and Co. no choice but to sign him to an extension. Based on how he’s been playing, he could remain in New York for a few more years at the least.
If the Knicks sign IQ to an extension, the only bad thing about that would be what it would mean for Obi Toppin’s future. He’s extension-eligible this summer as well. New York picked up his fourth-year option so Toppin could hang around for another season, but it also seems likely that he could be included in a deal for a big-name player this summer if one becomes available.
For now, though, fans can sit back and enjoy watching Immanuel Quickley and the Knicks play some of the best basketball that the team has played in a long time.
