After blowing a 23-point lead at home to the Atlanta Hawks, the New York Knicks (3-4) will travel to Pennsylvania to face the Philadelphia 76ers (4-5).
Despite the 76ers being viewed as a championship contender, they are struggling right out of the gate. However, a bright spot has been guard Tyrese Maxey, who is emerging into a star because of how explosive he is off the dribble and his improved outside shooting. Through nine games, Maxey is averaging 24.2 points and is shooting 46.8 % from three.
Philadelphia’s inability to get stops on defense when it needs to the most is why the team is currently one game under .500. The 76ers are a bottom 10 team in NBA defensive efficiency right now because of their communication issues. This explains why they’re inconsistent on this end of the floor, even though they should be better with the additions of P.J. Tucker, Danuel House Jr., De’Anthony Melton, and Montrezl Harrell.
The 76ers are looking to bounce back after losing to the Washington Wizards on Wednesday, 121-111. Tyrese Maxey, Tobias Harris, and James Harden did the majority of the scoring for the starting lineup, combining for 72 of their 79 points. Maxey led the way with 32 points (11-of-20, 5-of-9 from three). It may be early in the season, but Philadelphia needs to win this game or else it might be time to hit the panic button.
On the other hand, the Knicks are looking to avoid their third straight loss after losing 112-99 to the Hawks on Wednesday. Jalen Brunson led New York in scoring with 20 points (8-of-15, 1-of-4 from three) and Obi Toppin led the team off the bench with 12 points (5-of-13, 2-of-6 from three).
Will the Knicks be able to snap their three-game losing streak to improve their record to 4-4?

New York has no one on its injury report. Philadelphia will be without James Harden (foot). Joel Embiid (illness) and Matisse Thybulle (ankle) are listed as questionable.
New York Knicks vs Philadelphia Sixers Prediction
Look for both teams to treat this game as a must-win with how poorly they each have played recently. Certainly, the Knicks want to erase that awful offensive performance with scoring only 34 points in the second half against the Hawks, while the 76ers will look for this to be the first step toward fixing their defensive issues.
With James Harden being out for a month due to suffering a right foot strain against the Wizards, I expect the Knicks to win this game because Philly will be limited on the offensive end. The 76ers don’t have anyone that can pick up the scoring and be the facilitator that Harden is. Before suffering this injury, Harden was second in the league averaging 10 assists per game.
The Wizards shot 57.7% from the field against the Sixers, so this should be the perfect get-right game for the Knicks after how poorly they played on the offensive end on Wednesday. What will determine the game is if New York’s backcourt can outplay Maxey in Harden’s absence.
I would take the over because of how poorly the 76ers are currently playing on defense. They haven’t shown that they can stop anyone, so if the Knicks can’t find any rhythm on the offensive end, the frustration will continue to build.

Knicks' Tom Thibodeau has continued to opt to play Julius Randle over Obi Toppin, even though the younger power forward has been the better player.
