NY Knicks: Kyle Lowry can help sustain the team’s success

When saying 2021 Kyle Lowry fits a team’s timeline, it can mean one of two things.

It can mean he fits a title-contending team that’s looking to add another win-now piece, hence why there were so many Lowry to the Lakers and 76ers rumors around the trade deadline.

The other fit is where Lowry joins a young team that is new to success and is looking to help that team grow and reach the next level. That’s the NY Knicks.

The New York Knicks are ahead of schedule. Claiming the 4th seed in the East and reaching the playoffs with a young roster was an achievement no one saw coming. Now the question is, how can they go even further in the playoffs next season and beyond?

At age 35, it’s hard to imagine Kyle Lowry demanding anything more than a 2-year deal. He may even want a 1-year contract to keep his future options even more flexible. It will be an expensive short-term deal, perhaps one in the neighborhood of 2-year 50 million deal, but the NY Knicks are one of the few teams with the cap space to offer that kind of money.

This isn’t the summer to spend recklessly on long-term deals. New York could explore one of the younger free agents, but the names on the table don’t scream “go out and dish multiple big contracts”. They don’t want to lock themselves into overpriced long-term contracts that look them into a middling playoff team for years to come.

It seems like New York recognizes this, and a short-term Lowry contract gives them up flexibility for 2022, a year with a much more star-studded potential free agent pool. Lowry could be on an expiring deal and at the very least, be a tradeable contract.

Let’s not forget the player himself – Kyle Lowry is more than just cap-flexibility. He may be towards the end of his career, but he is still a highly productive player who could fit seamlessly into the NY Knicks offense. Let’s examine what he brings on the court.
