Knicks: Baron Davis offers to take NY coaching job, calls Derek Fisher a ‘con artist’
Former New York Knicks guard Baron Davis made some interesting comments on Twitter.
The New York Knicks are searching for their seventh coach in seven years and perhaps they should scroll through Twitter to identify interested candidates.
Former NBA player Baron Davis offered to take the job in response to a tweet criticizing the franchise for considering “dinosaur” coaches like Tom Thibodeau for their next hire instead of young black coaches.
The Los Angeles native also called out former Knicks coach Derek Fisher in his tweet, calling him a “con artist.”
Davis finished his NBA career with the Knicks during the 2011-12 season, playing in 29 games before suffering a gruesome knee injury. He signed with New York shortly before Linsanity took over the NBA world, and ended up replacing Lin as the starting point guard when the Harvard sensation was lost due to his own knee injury.
This is not the first time Davis has called out Derek Fisher in public. In 2018, he posted a tweet condemning the former Lakers point guard for joining Luxury Asset Capital, an alternative financing entity for athletes. There appears to be hard feelings from Fisher’s time as president of the NBA player’s union from 2006 to 2013.
New York Knicks still searching for answer along the sideline.
Fisher was hired by Phil Jackson once Steve Kerr spurned the Knicks for the Warriors. After signing a five-year deal with no prior coaching experience, Fisher was fired during his second season in New York with a 40-96 record.
The Knicks are expected to make a quick decision on a coaching hire once the team learns whether or not they will be required to return to the court this season. While the NBA is considering a variety of options to resume the 2019-20 season, it is reportedly a “long shot” for the Knicks to be invited to play again.
Speculation over who will coach the Knicks next season has been prevalent since Leon Rose took over as team president. A report last week named Tom Thibodeau as the leading candidate for the job, with the New York Daily News reporting this weekend that Thibs has started to make calls to assemble a staff. Perhaps he should call Baron Davis!
Interim coach Mike Miller has done an admirable job leading the team since David Fizdale – a 45-year-old African-American coach – was fired in December. The Knicks are also expected to interview former Nets coach Kenny Atkinson for the job, and give Miller a passing interview.
