The New York Knicks were not a prominent part of the 2019-20 NBA GM Survey.

On Thursday, NBA.com released its annual GM Survey for the 2019-20 season. The league’s general managers vote on topics for the upcoming season, featuring the favorite to win the championship, ranking teams in each conference and who will win the NBA MVP award. Each team usually appears at least once in this anticipated survey, including the New York Knicks.

The aforementioned team appeared on the GM Survey multiple times, but in no prominent spot for any question:

Which player is most likely to have a breakout season in 2019-20?

No New York Knick was in the top four in voting, but Julius Randle became an honorable mention for receiving votes. His 2018-19 season was arguably a breakout year, averaging 21.4 points and 8.7 rebounds per game for the New Orleans Pelicans.

Clearly, some GMs think Randle could do more. However, De’Aaron Fox, Jaren Jackson Jr., Jayson Tatum, Brandon Ingram and Jamal Murray are all ahead of him.

Which team will be most improved in 2019-20?

The Knicks, at four percent, placed eighth in the most improved question. Four teams tied for fourth, while the Los Angeles Lakers (38 percent), Dallas Mavericks (21 percent) and Los Angeles Clippers (10 percent) were the top three teams.

New York’s overturned its roster, signing seven players and selecting two in the draft, so they could take a step forward from 17 wins. Just how far remains unknown.

Who is the best assistant coach in the NBA?

Three assistant coaches tied for first place and five tied for fourth. A handful of coaches received votes, too, including the Knicks’ Keith Smart, one of David Fizdale’s top assistants.

Which player is the most athletic?

The NBA clearly sees something in Mitchell Robinson, who tied for third, at seven percent, in the most athletic question. This became apparent throughout his rookie season, impressing at both sides of the court. Fans will not forget his alley-oops.

Zion Williamson, even as a 19-year-old rookie, placed first, at 41 percent. Giannis Antetokounmpo, at 28 percent, was second.

What was the most surprising move of the offseason?

Marcus Morris’ offseason decision received votes for the most surprising move. The veteran forward reneged an agreement with the San Antonio Spurs to sign with the Knicks.

Rookie questions

Despite being the third overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft, RJ Barrett was nowhere to be found on any of the three questions for rookies:

  • Who will win the 2018-19 Rookie of the Year?
  • Which rookie will be the best player in five years?
  • Which rookie was the biggest steal at where he was selected in the Draft?

The biggest steal is not a surprise, since Barrett was selected high in the draft. Still, he did not place among the potential Rookie of the Year winners, with Williamson, Ja Morant and Darius Garland taking precedence. Williamson, Morant, Garland, Jarrett Culver and Cameron Reddish also received votes for the best rookie in five years.

This is only a survey and not indicative of how the 2019-20 NBA season will transpire for the New York Knicks, but their players’ perception is still worthwhile to note.
