The New York Knicks will not miss any players who left in free agency
By Teresa Powe
The New York Knicks let all of their free agents walk this summer, replacing them with veterans from around the NBA.
Sounds kind of harsh, doesn’t it? Everyone should wish these former New York Knicks the best.
DeAndre Jordan decided to join his friend Kevin Durant as a Brooklyn Net, but, before that, he put in quality work with Mitchell Robinson, who ended the season as No. 2 on the NBA blocks list for 2018-19 season. With Jordan gone, the Knicks acquired vet Taj Gibson to not only play but continue the lessons for Robinson. Gibson is used to be on a winning team and has playoff experience under ex-head coach Tom Thibodeau.
Mario Hezonja left for the Portland Trail Blazers. The Knicks’ third pick of the draft, RJ Barrett if not right away, will soon be the Knicks’ small forward. His Summer League numbers started slowly, but he ended July as the first player in summer league history to average more than 15 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists.
Luke Kornet, agreed to a two-year deal with the Chicago Bulls. The Knicks did not get sign center in free agency this summer, but they did get Bobby Portis, who can back up Mitchell Robinson. He told this to Marc Berman of the New York Post earlier this summer:
"“I don’t care about starting or coming off the bench,” Portis told The Post in a phone interview from Los Angeles on Friday. “I envision myself being a Sixth Man of the Year candidate.”"

Emmanuel Mudiay was helped by Coach David Fizdale as he promised. The 2015 lottery pick was joined the Utah Jazz as the backup to point guard Mike Conley. In his place, the Knicks have Dennis Smith Jr. who worked hard on his game this summer, and Elfrid Payton, who scored triple-doubles in five straight games last season for the New Orleans Pelicans.
Noah Vonleh, a fan favorite, sometimes started and worked hard for the Knicks. It was unfortunate when he didn’t play well at the end of the season. The Minnesota Timberwolves did pick him up for a one-year deal. Although the Knicks have several power forwards this season, bet it will be Julius Randle taking the starting spot this season.
Henry Ellensen signed a two-way deal with the Brooklyn Nets. The ex-Detroit Piston was there when the Knicks needed him from to add that lift when players were out with injuries. With the number of power forwards on the roster this upcoming season, this should not be a problem.
John Jenkins was pulled from the G League at the end of the year when the Knicks were riddled with injuries. He has not yet joined another team.
Lance Thomas, a definite fan favorite, was once the longest-tenured Knick. Given the glut of frontcourt players now on the team, he was not re-signed and remains a free agent.
Each team moves on from players in the offseason, and the New York Knicks were just one of them. These players left as part of a cap-clearing effort, and while superstars did not replace any of them, this roster has intriguing players to potentially increase competitiveness this season.
