Honorable Mention: Is Damyean Dotson The Missing Piece?

In the weeks leading up to the 2018 NBA trade deadline, it was incessantly reported that the New York Knicks were in the market for an athletic wing. New York was reportedly hoping to find a perimeter player who could help push the pace and defend multiple positions.

It’s entirely possible that the Knicks are still without that player, but it would be worth looking into the possibility of Damyean Dotson being able to fill that void.

The Knicks selected Dotson at No. 44 overall in the 2017 NBA Draft. It was a Phil Jackson move, of course, but general manager Scott Perry and head coach Jeff Hornacek seem to be intrigued by the rookie shooting guard’s two-way potential.

Even when Dotson didn’t have a spot in the rotation, the Knicks made sure that he was receiving professional experience in the NBA G League.

Now that Kristaps Porzingis is injured and the postseason is out of the discussion, playing Dotson should become a priority. He may not be the missing piece, but he’s the best option New York has on the current roster.

Attempting to tap into Dotson’s potential in 2017-18 could either give the front office the green light to acquire a wing or save the Knicks from a potentially unfavorable investment.
