Rumor: Mavericks Keeping Tabs On Willy Hernangomez

The San Antonio Spurs having interest in Willy Hernangomez makes sense on multiple levels. Not only does he fit the mold of the big men whom San Antonio prefers to build with, but he has an existing relationship with Spurs center Pau Gasol.

For as nice of a fit as that would be, Michael Scotto of The Athletic reports that the Spurs aren’t the only Texas-based franchise expressing interest in acquiring Hernangomez.

"Knicks center Willy Hernangomez has drawn trade interest from several teams, including the Spurs and Mavericks, league sources told The Athletic."

The Spurs makes sense from a basketball perspective, but the Dallas Mavericks could make this something of a Texas arms race

Dallas currently plays Dirk Nowitzki at center, which works for the offense in some ways. Nowitzki is still one of the best shooters in the NBA, and his ability to stretch the floor inevitably creates driving lanes for the Mavericks’ athletic wings.

If Dallas is hoping to add a player who can go to the post, rebound at a high level, and create for their teammates, however, then Hernangomez would certainly makes sense.

Rick Carlisle could conceivably run his offense through a combination of Dennis Smith Jr. at point guard and Hernangomez in the high post. Throw in the fact that Hernangomez has expressed a desire to expand his three-point range, and he would fit well with Nowitzki and the Mavericks.

New York could potentially push for scoring guard Yogi Ferrell and a second-round draft pick if Dallas is serious about negotiating.
