The New York Knicks will honor the New York Fire Department with their City Edition uniforms. The proceeds will go to various charities.

The New York Knicks play in a city that’s as much about community as it is skyscrapers and overpriced deli food. Through tragedy and triumph, New York has managed to stand tall and united in the face of both glory and adversity.

That was never proven more true than by how New York City responded to the indescribable events of September 11, 2001.

The terrorist attacks that were conducted on 9/11 challenged the mettle of both the city and the nation. Bravery and strength prevailed, with individuals far and wide strengthening their status as community members.

In a tweet from the official New York Knicks Twitter account, it was revealed that the organization will honor a group of heroes from that calamitous day: The FDNY.

According to a press release via NBA.com, the proceeds from the City Edition merchandise and the Knicks 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Event will go to various charities affiliated with firefighters.

"Through the proceeds from the Knicks City Edition merchandise line and the Knicks 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Event, the Knicks will donate to the Uniformed Firefighters Association Widows and Children’s Fund, the NFFF and other charities affiliated with firefighters."

In other words: In addition to being good looking jerseys, purchasing one of your own would be for a good cause.

New York will debut the City Edition jerseys on Tuesday, Jan. 30 against the Brooklyn Nets. The game between the cross-city rivals will be played at Madison Square Garden, with a 7:30 p.m. ET starting time.

Even more important than the basketball game itself, however, is the manner in which the Knicks are paying homage to some of the bravest men and women in this great city.

Once the merchandise is made available, fans will be able to contribute to charities such as the Uniformed Firefighters Association Widows and Children’s Fund. The Knicks also listed the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation as a charity that will receive a share of the proceeds.

Thus, in addition to creating a beautiful jersey, the Knicks have created an opportunity to honor and help the families of those who have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
