Knicks Rumors: Pros and Cons of potentially signing Archie Goodwin
Pro: Untapped Potential
In four NBA seasons, Archie Goodwin has appeared in a grand total of 165 games—an average of 41.25 per season. Any player who averages half a season of play is one who carries a red flag, especially when the numbers aren’t especially skewed by any one season.
He only played 15 games in 2016-17, yes, but Goodwin missed 30 games as a rookie, 41 games in 2014-15, and 25 games in 2015-16.
That may seem like a con, but there’s a silver lining: At 23 years of age, Goodwin has four years in NBA locker rooms and his entire career ahead of him. Most of his absences were due to the surplus of talent that the Phoenix Suns had at guard.
Between Eric Bledsoe, Devin Booker, Goran Dragic, and Isaiah Thomas, finding minutes for non-stars—relatively speaking—wasn’t exactly the easiest of tasks for Phoenix.
Knowing this to be true, it’s fair to be intrigued by Goodwin’s untapped potential. He’s not the typical four-year player looking for a new job. The general theory around the NBA is that he could become a quality player if he develops his jump shot.
By taking a chance on Goodwin, the Knicks would have a potentially dominant force in the G League and another upside player on a team-friendly deal on the main roster.
