Carmelo Anthony’s Future

From wanting to stay with the New York Knicks, to wanting to leave the New York Knicks, to wanting to leave the New York Knicks for one team only, the trade rumors haven’t stopped ever since the regular season came to a close.

‘Melo reportedly would have accepted a trade to Cleveland in July. When news broke that Kyrie Irving wants to leave Cleveland, fans immediately drew up an Irving-for-Anthony swap. A star for a star.

Irving would be able to join his close-to-hometown team, and Anthony would play with LeBron James. However, it was soon revealed that Anthony didn’t even want that anymore. His wish to go to Houston was strong and firm.

Some believe that Anthony’s stubbornness is the reason why the Irving deal didn’t happen immediately. It is known, however, that offers from six teams (including the Knicks) were made to the Cavaliers for Irving.

The details of each offer haven’t been disclosed, but it’s fair to question if Cleveland viewed Anthony as enough.

The Knicks also expressed a desire to talk to Anthony in regards to him possibly staying with the organization. His unsurprising answer is reportedly a firm no. In short, here’s a summary of what’s happened and what can eventually happen:

  • Carmelo Anthony, as of now, wants to be a Houston Rocket and nothing else.
  • Houston and New York cannot agree to terms on a fair deal just yet.
  • Irving wants to be a Knick,
    • Anthony does not want to be a Cavalier
      • Therefore, a deal with Cleveland is unlikely
  • Buying out Anthony’s contract isn’t an option that Perry and Mills are looking at.

Expect Anthony and Irving’s names to be thrown around for the rest of this summer.
