Knicks Trade Rumors: Pros and Cons of potentially trading for Marcus Smart
Pro: Fitting The Timeline
The New York Knicks have committed to rebuilding the organization with a youth movement. Point guard Frank Ntilikina is 18 years of age, power forward Kristaps Porzingis is 21, and center Willy Hernangomez is 23.
If New York were to execute a trade for Marcus Smart, then it would be successfully committing to the desire to build a younger and more sustainable roster.
Smart may have three years in the NBA, but he turned 23 years of age in March. That’s a sign of the untapped potential that he possesses, as well as the fact that the prime of his career is still years ahead of him.
Thus, while a trade for Smart may not work out immediately, a move for him would enable the Knicks to build along a long-term timeline.
Smart can play both guard positions, which would enable Ntilikina to develop in a more progressive manner. He can defend multiple positions, which would enable the Knicks to alleviate pressure from Kristaps Porzingis.
Not many trades would work out for the Knicks at this current juncture, but a move for Smart would be wise on multiple levels.
