Derrick Williams, UFA

Position: Small Forward
Age: 26 (5/25/1991)
Experience: 6th Season
2016-17 Slash Line: .443/.309/.652
2016-17 Season Averages: 16.1 MPG, 6.1 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 0.6 3PM

The New York Knicks will have a chance to watch a former player come off the bench in the 2017 NBA Finals. Fan favorite Derrick Williams spent the first half of 2016-17 with the Miami Heat, and was picked up by the Cleveland Cavaliers afterwards.

Williams may not be playing at the highest possible level, but he’s likely to be available for a low cost and a short-term contract.

In 2015-16, Williams averaged 9.3 points on 45.0 percent shooting during 80 appearances with the Knicks. In 26 games after the 2016 All-Star Break, he upped those numbers to 10.2 points on an efficient slash line of .490/.438/.746.

Williams may not have excelled with the Cavaliers or Heat thus far, but he’d be an outstanding fit with head coach Jeff Hornacek.

Williams has a chance to prove himself with the Cavaliers during the 2017 NBA Finals. He may not be a featured player, but he’s the type of explosive athlete who can get hot and make the type of plays that bring a home crowd to life.

Considering the Knicks have a limited amount of cap space, signing Williams to a low-cost deal could be an ideal decision.
