Leader Now Or Later?

This ultimately comes down to the hands of a very select group of people: the front office of the New York Knicks, Carmelo Anthony and, you guessed it, Kristaps Porzingis himself.

Again, if you’re Phil Jackson, your job entails more than listening and observing. Instead, speak (cautiously) with Porzingis (and Anthony while you’re at it). From what Porzingis has told the media in the past, he wants ‘Melo to be out there to make things easier for him.

If only someone could tell him that basketball isn’t supposed to be easy—especially if you’re going to be the face of one of the biggest basketball brands ever.

Jackson needs to tell Porzingis, if he hasn’t already, that he wants him to be the future of this organization. He can’t just play under Carmelo Anthony for eternity because of the age difference between the two, the possibility of ‘Melo being sent away, and the necessary independence that the Unicorn must build sooner or later.

Meanwhile, Anthony needs to talk with Jackson and Porzingis about his own future with the team. The three of them must discuss ‘Melo’s future in Porzingis’ best interest.

As long as Kristaps Porzingis is willing to be the star of the franchise sooner rather than later, then the New York Knicks should be more at ease in dealing with Anthony and the rest of the team.
