Terrance Ferguson is American, but he opted to go the professional route instead of joining one of the top U.S. colleges. He’s playing overseas, gaining experience in the rugged Australian NBL with the Adelaide 36ers.
Though drafting Ferguson in the Top 10 doesn’t currently project to be a wise decision, if New York somehow makes the playoffs, he could be an option later in the first round.
The best upside comparison for Ferguson at this current juncture is Orlando Magic swingman Terrence Ross. Like Ross, Ferguson is a 6’7″ shooting guard with a thin frame, a solid jump shot, and explosive leaping ability.
Ross has developed into a solid two-way player during his five NBA seasons, and there’s reason to believe Ferguson can do the same.
Ferguson’s ability to get out in transition and finish above the rim could be a galvanizing force at Madison Square Garden. His 3-point range is developing, as well, and he has the physical tools to become a plus defender.
There’s more upside than anything else with Ferguson, but he’s an unselfish player who could fit well in any system he’s plugged into.
