Voice In The Community

Being a leader in sports is something that any fan can appreciate. Being a leader on the social front, however, will elevate one’s status to heights of incomparable respect and admiration.

Carmelo Anthony’s status in basketball is nothing to sell short, but it’s his fight for social change that’s truly worth discussing.

Anthony sparked a movement in the sports world when he implored his fellow athletes and celebrities to take a stand for what they believe. It was a beautiful message that included a photograph of socially influential athletes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Muhammad Ali, and Jim Brown.

For those who haven’t seen it:

Shortly thereafter, Anthony took the stage with fellow NBA superstars Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, and LeBron James at the 2016 ESPY Awards. All four delivered powerful speeches.

Anthony and his Team USA teammates are even organizing a town hall meeting in Los Angeles.

Though this is the first recognition he’s receiving on the national stage, Anthony has been an active member in the community for quite some time. Over the past year or so, he’s marched for Freddie Gray in Baltimore, and donated 800 boxes of food to less fortunate families in the Bronx.

As it pertains to basketball, a man who demands political and social reform will be respected by his peers.
