Friday night featured a inter-city rivalry between the New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets.

Brooklyn held a 2-1 edge on New York for the city’s bragging rights. Each team defended their home court, and the Knicks looked to continue that trend in Madison Square Garden.

Although, New York would have to continue that trend without a couple of starters. Jose Calderon was sidelined with a contused right quad, while Kristaps Porzingis is ailing from a sore left shoulder. The injury allowed rookie Jerian Grant to receive his first start of the season.

First quarter’s play was fitting as to how the season has been going for both New York City teams, complete trash… Both teams shot sub-40% from the field, and combined for seven turnovers in the opening period.

The action picked up in the second quarter, as New York-native Sean Kilpatrick heated up for the Nets, scoring 11 of his team-high 17 points in the period.

The Knicks kept pace with the Nets, thanks in large part to Cleanthony Early, who was just recently recalled from the NBA Development League. Early scored seven points in the second quarter, and looked good all things considered.

It was a very boring game despite it going back-and-forth with one tie, and 11 lead changes in the first half. New York entered halftime with a 47-46 lead with an extremely friendly roll for an Langston Galloway buzzer-beater.

In the third quarter, the Knicks were red-hot from downtown, connecting on six consecutive three-pointers! Half of them coming from Derrick Williams, who was a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the arc Friday night, finishing the game with 16 points.

However… New York missed a ton of two-point field goals in that span… missing nine straight from within the arc… Nevertheless, Brooklyn could not withstand the three-point barrage as the Knicks outscored the Nets 30-24 in the third quarter.

In the third quarter, Grant rewarded interim head coach Kurt Rambis for starting him by displaying a glimpse of his potential in the period, scoring seven points and dishing out four assists. Grant had a solid game, finishing with 14 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists. Grant also shot the ball well, going 6-of-13 from the field, including a couple of three-pointers. All of which is very encouraging to see. Let’s hope he can show more of the same for the remainder of the season.

Brooklyn was close throughout the game, and a mini 4-0 run got the Nets to within one-possession early in the final period. That is when Galloway took over, scoring eight consecutive points, ERUPTING for 14 fourth quarter points! Galloway went BERSERK, connecting on four three-pointers in the final period.

Galloway’s play propelled the Knicks to a blowout 105-91 victory over the Nets. The close and competitive game went to a 22 point lead in a blink of an eye with Galloway’s explosion. Galloway finished with a game-high 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists.

It was nice to see Galloway and Grant respond well to the opportunity that the veterans on the team has given them, with Anthony, Calderon, and Robin Lopez requesting Rambis to play the younger players more. The big men Kyle O’Quinn and Kevin Seraphin also responded well, combining for 21 points and 12 rebounds Friday night.
