The Atlanta Hawks have been stuck in basketball limbo for almost a decade. Atlanta is good enough to make the playoffs with relative ease, but not great enough to have a legitimate shot at winning an NBA championship.

Fred Kerber of The New York Post is the latest to report that Jeff Teague is one of the players Atlanta plans to trade in order to reset and revitalize the organization.

"One league exec claimed the Hawks “are going to break up that team,” so Teague, Kyle Korver and Al Horford have been mentioned as candidates to move. Korver may entice the Cavs (3), while Boston could be looking at Horford or Houston’s Dwight Howard (4)."

For the New York Knicks, this report offers reason to be intrigued.

Teague, an All-Star in 2015, is one of the more well-rounded point guards in the NBA. He couples paralyzing quickness with a skill set that includes solid court vision, an efficient jump shot, strong defense, and the ability to penetrate against the zone.

Ian Begley of ESPN reported in late January that Teague had been tied to the Knicks.

The interest is warranted, but the only thing that truly matters is whether or not New York can pull a trade off.

Acquiring Teague would likely mean dealing Arron Afflalo and either Langston Galloway or Jerian Grant. Dennis Schroder is the future at point guard in Atlanta, but adding a capable backup—Galloway makes sense as a clutch maestro who can defend both guard spots—will likely be a factor.

More knicks: Let's dream big. Which stars are available for the Knicks to pursue?

If there’s any star-caliber player to whom New York has been realistically tied, it’s Teague. Only time will tell if Phil Jackson can make something happen.
