89. Final. 100. 27. 88

On Sunday night the New York Knicks easily defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 100-88 after a slow start.

New York started off the game missing 6/7 from the field, allowing Milwaukee to jump out to an early 10-2 lead. The Knicks looked sluggish and slow out of the gate and the Bucks capitalized. Jabari Parker had his way in the first quarter, scoring eight of his total 14 points in the opening period.

And then just like that, the switch flipped.

New York was the team that started playing harder. New York was the team that started getting all the hustle plays. The Knicks were able to completely erase the early deficit and even briefly lead in the first quarter, eventually settling on a stalemate; tied at 24 after one quarter of play.

The momentum carried on for the Knicks into the second and third quarter, where New York outscored Milwaukee 58-36 in the two quarters combined. The Knicks led by as many as 22 points Sunday night.

Derrick Williams was the energizer bunny for the Knicks in the second quarter, throwing down three dunks in the period! Williams’ play really got the fans involved, as Madison Square Garden grew louder and louder.

New York really got whatever they wanted Sunday night, scoring 44 points in the paint. The Knicks normally only average 35.3 points in the paint per game, the worst in the league per NBA.com.

And when New York did miss, you already know who was there to clean it up!

Kristaps Porzingis was really feeling it on Sunday night, he even banked in a three-pointer from the hash-mark! Which he actually almost did twice, just missing another one as the clock expired in the second quarter.

Not only did Porzingis had it going on offensively but the rookie also dominated the game defensively, rejecting five shots in the game! Throwing Milwaukee a block party!

Porzingis finished the game with 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 blocks. The rookie was not the only player that had his way with the Bucks though, so did Carmelo Anthony! Melo almost collected a triple-double Sunday night with 24 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists. Anthony continues to show his willingness to pass the ball this season. Anthony also shot efficiently again, going 10/16 from the field.

Milwaukee gave New York a brief scare as they cut the Knicks’ lead down to ten points in the fourth quarter. Once sought after free agent Greg Monroe (loudly booed during introductions) led the Bucks’ comeback, scoring ten of his game high 28 points in the final period. Monroe finished the game with his 18th double-double of season with 28 points and 10 rebounds.

Head coach Derek Fisher inserted the starters back into the game and the rest was history. Anthony received a loud ovation from the crowd for his terrific play Sunday night.

Porzingis also received a nice ovation moments later as well.

One thing that jumped out on the boxscore, that I did not realize while watching the game – was just how effective Jose Calderon was. Calderon finished the game with two three-pointers to score 9 points, and collected 4 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals for a plus-33 +/-. Plus 33! That number was shocking and really jumped out at me.

Hopefully the good vibes continue as the Knicks will host the Boston Celtics Tuesday night.
