According to Georg Szalai of The Hollywood Reporter, New York Knick‘s star forward Carmelo Anthony will be partnering up with Nickelodeon to make Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles products.

"The New York Knicks star and self-professed Turtles super-fan will serve as creative director of Turtles by Melo, a consumer products line inspired by the Nickelodeon franchise. It is expected to span lifestyle products, home furnishings, publishing, video games and more. Turtles by Melo is set to debut in the spring 2016, ahead of the summer theatrical release of Viacom-owned Paramount Pictures’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, in which Anthony has a cameo."

Let’s all hope that the sequel to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie in 2014 will be a million times better because the recent one was horrible… The movie received a 21% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and I would say that 21% is being generous. You were better off just re-watching the movies from the 90s, even all the fancy new CGI could not save the movie…

"“The Turtles were a big part of my childhood. I have been connecting with the brand for a long time,” – Carmelo Anthony"

Hey! I get it, as a kid growing up in the late 80’s, early 90’s, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were AMAZING! Ninja Turtles were everywhere! They had the cartoon show, the movies, comics (which IDW recently rebooted and is collected in a nice collected hardcover edition), and my personal favorite; the SNES video game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time. Actually a few years ago a remastered version of the 1991 game was released. I am sure it was geared towards my generation and I totally ate it up and bought Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled for some nostalgic fun.

From The Hollywood Reporter

"While not yet detailing full product ideas, he says the project was exciting to take on not only because he is a fan, but also because it adds another experience beyond his basketball career, charity work and business ventures. “For me it’s about stepping outside the box,” he explains. “It is something I never could have imagined.”"

As a huge TMNT fan myself, I can not blame Anthony for leveraging his stardom to do a project that is near and dear to his heart but one has to question how much of a distraction this opportunity may be. If he is to have his hands in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles product line, we as Knick’s fans have to hope it does not take too much of his time and focus, especially during the regular season.
