79. 38. 80. 27. Final

A strong start by Cole Aldrich gave the New York Knicks an early 30-24 lead over the Orlando Magic Saturday night. Aldrich put on a show with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal in just under nine minutes of play in the first quarter. The first quarter outburst far exceeds his season averages, which are 5.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

Victor Oladipo tried to keep Magic in the game with nine first quarter points. Oladipo finished the game with 21 points but needed 25 shots in order to accomplish this. The scoring in the game came to a grinding halt in the second quarter, especially for Orlando. The Magic were held scoreless for almost eight minutes in the second quarter. Orlando started the second quarter with 11 straight missed field goals and five turnovers. With less than two minutes to play Orlando was in danger of tying an all-time low of two points scored in a quarter by an individual team. A Tobias Harris free throw and a couple of Oladipo layups to end the first half allowed Orlando to avoid the disaster.

New York tied a franchise record for fewest points allowed in a quarter, unfortunately… New York however did not fare any better than Orlando in the second quarter… New York only scored only eight points in the quarter themselves. The combined 15 points set an NBA record for ineptitude…becoming the worst scoring quarter in NBA shot-clock era history (the previous record was 19 points).

Both teams shot at a dismal 15% from the field in the second quarter. New York went into halftime with the lead, with the score 38-31. Yes that was the score…

Langston Galloway scored seven points in a 9-4 Knicks’ run to start the third quarter to take a 47-35 lead three minutes into the second half. Galloway scored all of his nine points in the third quarter. Harris scored ten in the third quarter, but Orlando still lost the third quarter scoring 23-19. The score entering the final quarter was 61-50, advantage New York.

Orlando came back with a fury as the Knicks went scoreless for three minutes early in the fourth quarter; the Magic went on a 9-0 run during that stretch. Orlando eventually took the lead, extending the run to 19-4, to erase a double digit deficit and taking a one point lead 69-68 with 5:08 remaining in the game.

Quincy Acy was the lone Knick that was able to score for most of the fourth quarter, scoring all seven points in the first-half of the fourth quarter. New York would take back the lead on a Jason Smith jumper, but Oladipo responded with a turnaround jumper and an assist to Nikola Vucevic to take a 73-70 lead.

Aldrich tied the game up with a three-point play, getting fouled as he made the layup. The made free three gave Aldrich a new career high in scoring, finishing the game with 19 points.

It was an exciting finish to the game, despite the low scoring. Elfrid Payton pulled up just below the free throw line to give the Magic a 75-73 lead with 1:33 left in the game. Tim Hardaway Jr. erupted for seven straight points, including a dagger three-pointer that gave the Knicks an 80-77 lead with 12.6 seconds remaining in the game. New York escaped Orlando with a victory, winning 80-79 Saturday night.

All I want to say is…WHY!!! New York does not need any more wins…now the Minnesota Timberwolves can tie with the Knicks for the worst record in the NBA…

So one day after looking like deer in headlights with a season high 26 turnovers against the Milwaukee Bucks, the Knicks… combined with the ineptitude of the Magic…set a new NBA record for fewest combined points by two teams in a single quarter… The last two days perfectly summarizes the 2014-2015 Knickerbocker season… LET IT END ALREADY!
