Alexey Shved, the lone bright spot in Monday night’s game, shredded the Utah Jazz defense early on. Shved dished out three beautiful assist on New York’s first three possessions, prompting Quin Synder to call a quick timeout. The Jazz responded, taking the lead briefly 8-6 before New York went on a run of their own. The Knicks went on a 9-1 run to lead 15-9 mid-way through the opening quarter. New York from this point on went ice-cold from the field, converting only one field goal for the remainder of the quarter. Utah took full advantage of this, going on a 15-5 run to lead 24-20 at the end the first quarter.

Andrea Bargnani was the only reason New York kept it close in the first quarter, scoring eight points on four made field goals in the opening period. Other than Bargnani, it took the whole team to total up four made fields in the first quarter. Bargnani finished the game with 20 points. New York shot a dreadful 36.4% in the quarter, while Utah shot 52.6%. Derrick Favors had his way, reaching double figures in the opening quarter.

Despite the poor start, New York was able to reclaim the lead early in the second quarter. The Knicks went on a 7-2 run to start the second quarter, taking a 27-26 lead with 9:04 remaining in the first half. New York’s offense petered off again though, converting on only one made field goal for over six minutes. Utah was again able to take advantage, going on an 11-4 run to finish the first half with a 43-35 lead at halftime.

Bargnani hot shooting cooled off, as he went 1/5 in the second quarter. New York shot 27.8% in the second quarter, but was able to keep the game within reach by playing good defense themselves. New York was able to keep every Jazz in check except for Favor, who yet again… scored in double figures in a quarter.

New York came out of halftime with purpose Tuesday night, unlike Monday against Denver. The Knicks shot and passed the ball well around the perimeter in the third quarter, matching their first half assist totals in the third quarter alone. New York woke up on offense, collecting seven assist on 13 made field goals for a 30 point third quarter outburst. New York went on a 15-2 early in the third quarter to lead 55-51 with 4:59 remaining in the quarter.

Rodney Hood kept the Jazz in the game, scoring 13 of his 17 points in the third quarter. Hood’s showed off his three-point shooting prowess, knocking down three money ball in the quarter. The game was knotted up at the end of the third quarter at 65, which was a huge turnaround for New York, being down by as many as ten points earlier in the quarter.

With the game going back and forth early in the fourth quarter, tied at 73 after a Cole Aldrich hook shot, Joe Ingles swung all the momentum Utah’s way, going on a personal 7-2 run.

WHO!?

Joseph Howart Ingles, an Australian national basketball player who played oversea for most of his career until this season, when Utah signed the 6’8” small forward after an impressive 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup showing. Ingles’ full game was on display Tuesday night, finishing the game with 12 points, 5 assist, and 3 rebounds. Ingle had by far the best +/- of anyone, finishing the game with a +14. Ingles’ personal 7-2 gave Utah a five point lead, 80-75 with a little over four minutes left in the game.

New York’s deficit remained at five points with a minute remaining in the game, Shved came up with a huge block on Hood, and unfortunately Langston Galloway coughed up the ball in transition, allowing Dante Exum to steal the ball back. Another 24 seconds came off the clock, and the game should have been over, but Exum foolishly fouls Shved on a three-point attempt and Shved calmly knocked down all three free throws. With 26.1 seconds left in the game, and the score 85-82 New York needed to hope for miss free throws. Unfortunately the Knicks fouled Trey Burke, a career 84.2% free throw shooter, who calmly knocked down both attempts.

Favors dominated early in the game, and finished with 29 points and 12 rebounds. Shved again was the lone bright spot for New York, narrowly missing a triple double with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assist. What is most impressive is that Shved has improved his three-point shooting since joining the Knicks. Shved is a career 29.9% three-point shooter, but has upped his percentage to 34.6% in a small sample size of eight games.
