In a 2003 NBA world dominated by No. 1 overall pick LeBron James, a future star quarterback in the NFL chose Carmelo Anthony as his favorite player. Anthony’s career started with the Nuggets, where he was for eight years before the New York Knicks traded for him in 2011.

LeBron far exceeded the hype surrounding coming out of high school, and 20 years later, he’s still one of the best players in the league. Anthony did everything except win an NBA title, but that doesn’t take away from the legacy he left behind after retiring earlier this year.

After missing the playoffs for nine straight years, Melo led Denver to the postseason in the seven full seasons he played there. He was an iconic player in his own right, and although many young NBA fans selected LeBron as their favorite player, Patrick Mahomes went with Melo.

Patrick Mahomes reveals Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony was his favorite player growing up

Patrick Mahomes’ fandom started when Melo was with the Nuggets, but as he mentioned, it carried over to the forward’s time with the Knicks. Mahomes was eight years old when Melo entered the NBA and 15 when he was traded to the Knicks.

He rocked a No. 5 jersey in high school and at Texas Tech, but when the Chiefs drafted him, that number was already claimed by the kicker. Mahomes went with No. 15 instead, coincidentally the same jersey number Melo wore with the Nuggets. Mahomes’ jersey will one day be retired by Kansas City, and Denver (and New York) should do the same with Melo’s No. 15 and No. 7 jerseys.

The Texas native has been spotted sitting courtside at Mavericks games during the NFL offseason and is an avid Luka Doncic supporter. Still, Anthony, not Dirk Nowitzki, got the honor of being the young star’s favorite player.

There can’t be many Chiefs and Knicks fans out there, but for those who support both teams, this will only make you like Patrick Mahomes even more.
