3 Tasks the Knicks still need to accomplish this offseason
1. Finding a replacement for Obi Toppin
To no surprise, the Knicks opted to trade Obi Toppin to the Indiana Pacers this offseason. Now, New York needs a new backup power forward to play behind Julius Randle. Depending on who they choose to fill this hole, this new backup very well could not receive many minutes. That means we could see New York do some unorthodox things instead of spending money on a free agent or swinging a trade.
According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Knicks plan to use Isaiah Roby as the team’s primary backup power forward. Alongside this, we could see Tom Thibodeau run either RJ Barrett or Josh Hart at backup four in certain situations. While this is far from the most ideal situation, it may be better than spending money considering the rules under the new CBA.
Realistically, Roby shouldn’t be any team’s backup power forward, let alone the Knicks. While he may put up solid numbers, he’s a liability on defense and incredibly limited on offense while also being undersized for a power forward. Does this sound familiar?
Hart and Barrett backing up Randle would be interesting to see. While it would only work in certain situations, it would likely produce some fun basketball to watch. Regardless, hopefully Rose looks into the free agent market at some of the players who are left to secure better depth at the four.
