#4 – April 5, 2023: Toppin drops 32 points in Indiana

It’s pretty ironic that Obi Toppin was just dealt to the Indiana Pacers since there is just something about him facing that team that has worked out very nicely for him. Maybe part of why Indiana was interested in and ultimately acquired him was because they were sick of facing him four times a year (Spoiler warning: We will see another Toppin versus Indiana game very soon).

Coming in at No. 4 on this list is Toppin’s fourth-highest scoring game in the NBA. He made five three-pointers on 12 attempts (41.7%), shot 11-for-18 (61.1%) overall, and matched his career high in assists with six. He finished the contest as a +18.

He did all of this as the starting power forward, playing in 43 minutes of action. This was also a part of the reason why I dubbed this “The Kid Three” game (I wish that caught on). Immanuel Quickley scored a game-high 39 points and Quentin Grimes also went off for 36 points in the Knicks’ explosive 138-129 victory.

Toppin had a ton of dunks in this game, but the best one had to be on the connection with Grimes (go to 50 seconds in the clip above). After stealing the ball and igniting a fast break, Toppin threw it ahead to Grimes, who proceeded to throw a no-look alley-oop pass above his head for Toppin to slam home. Grimes crashed to the floor, and Toppin nearly tripped trying to help him up and get back on defense. Toppin and Grimes (and IQ for that matter) might have a future in Hollywood doing action/slapstick comedy films.
