2019 NBA Draft: SG/SF RJ Barrett, B+

Compared to others, RJ Barrett’s career hasn’t quite panned out like some would have hoped. Despite this, Barrett’s contributions to a playoff-contending Knicks team cannot be overlooked. Some can criticize the Knicks for not taking a player like Darius Garland, but at the time of the draft, there was no doubt about which player was going third overall.

In four seasons with the Knicks, Barrett has averaged 18.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 42.2% from the field and 34.3% from three on 4.8 attempts. Barrett’s career has been full of ups and downs but remember, he’s still just 23, and after a huge playoff run he could be primed for a breakout season in 2023-24.

Barrett’s inconsistencies have held him back since being drafted, causing some fans to suggest trading him for a more consistent veteran star. While fans would hate to see Barrett go, watching him look like a superstar one month to look like he doesn’t belong in the league the next cannot continue.

RJ Barrett must show fans that he can be a consistent player soon. This sort of play can’t continue if the Knicks want to take their potential championship window seriously.
