Monday night was all about Nikola Jokić and the Nuggets after they defeated the Heat, 4-1, to win their first NBA title. New York Knicks fans breathed a sigh of relief knowing that Miami wouldn’t get to hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

Watching Denver celebrate led to congratulations from current and former NBA players, including Trae Young. After tweeting that the Nuggets deserved to win the finals, the guard sent out another tweet that promptly led to him being clowned on social media.

Young and the Hawks made it to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021, the same year that they eliminated the Knicks in the first round, but since then, have been first-round exits in back-to-back seasons. Atlanta has won a combined three playoff games in the past two years.

Sure, anything can happen in the NBA, but there’s a reason why Twitter had a field day with Young’s tweet about the Hawks being up next to win the championship.

NBA Twitter clowns Trae Young after hilarious post-NBA Finals tweet

Trae Young had the right intentions, but maybe he should’ve thought twice before making that thought public. It’s normal for players to get extra motivation from watching the winning team celebrate on basketball’s biggest stage. However, Young hasn’t done much to prove that he’s worthy of carrying the Hawks that far. Twitter thought so, too.

After firing Nate McMillan midseason, Atlanta did make a solid hire by bringing in Quin Snyder. McMillan and Young had a couple of public rifts, including one earlier in the 2022-23 season that resulted in Young not showing up to State Farm Arena to watch his team take on the Nuggets. The Hawks letting McMillan go was viewed as a move to appease Young, but it’ll be tough for Snyder to have his squad championship ready in one year.

Although Young believes that Atlanta will win it all in 2024, he’s already been caught up in trade rumors. He’s been linked to teams like the Lakers, who are expected to pursue a point guard this summer, whether it be Chris Paul, Kyrie Irving, or Young. Maybe when Young was referring to “we” he was talking about the team that will deal for him this offseason. And no, that team shouldn’t be the Knicks.

Anyways, thanks a lot for the amusement, Trae!
