Trade #2: Dumping Fournier’s contract for a former Knick legend

Following the theme of adding three-point shooters, this deal has the Knicks shipping Evan Fournier and a 2025 pick off for a familiar face.

McDermott may not see a heavy dosage of minutes like Hield would, but he would undoubtedly be a valuable player at a low price. Barring some unforeseen change, the Bucks’ pick will likely have little-to-no value, and obviously, Fournier isn’t some big game-changer.

Why would the Spurs do this trade? Draft picks and cap space. While they could clear money by letting McDermott’s contract expire after this season, they’d save even more by taking on Fournier’s contract in addition to gaining a first-round pick. It’s rather clear that the team won’t be shooting for wins, even after drafting Victor Wembanyama, so they’re likely going to continue saving cap space and picks in order to eventually push toward title contention.

This trade wouldn’t move the needle much for the Knicks, but it would certainly make them better for the 2023-24 season while also allowing them to make more moves due to the lack of assets given up.
