The New York Knicks are in offseason mode, but the NBA offseason hasn’t officially begun. The drama will start on draft night when a flurry of trades could happen, but things will get more interesting after the draft when free agency begins.

All eyes are on the Knicks as they are in possession of a hoard of assets that they could cash in for a star this summer. What stars will be available isn’t known yet, but based on how last offseason went, it’ll only be a matter of time until a disgruntled player wants out. Players such as Karl-Anthony Towns, Damian Lillard, and Trae Young could be on the move. Whether or not the Knicks should be interested in those three players specifically is another matter.

With the rumors and reports that have already been circulating, the offseason should be another entertaining one.

When can the Knicks and other NBA teams trade players again?

Because the Knicks have been eliminated from the playoffs and their 2022-23 season has officially ended, they’re allowed to trade players. If New York would’ve been awarded the No. 11 or No. 12 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, the belief was that the front office could’ve tried to package that pick in a trade. However, since the Mavericks stayed put at No. 10, that unfortunately isn’t a scenario that Knicks fans need to think about.

There’s still a chance that New York could try to trade into the draft, presumably for a late first-round draft pick. That’s a deal that could happen anytime between now and draft night on June 22.

As of right now, the only three teams in the NBA that are unable to make trades are the Nuggets, Heat, and Celtics. Whichever team is eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals will be able to make trades as soon as their season ends.

The 2023-24 season will officially begin on July 1, which marks the start of the moratorium period. It’s also the official start to free agency, but because of the moratorium period, deals (free agency signings, extensions, trades) that were made during that time frame can’t be made official until July 6 at 12:01 p.m. ET when the moratorium period ends.

Over the course of the next few weeks, the NBA offseason will start to pick up steam. Get ready, Knicks fans.
