Series of tweets from Villanova trio throw Knicks fans into Twitter frenzy
It’s normal for NBA players to be more active on social media during the offseason versus the regular season. With the additional free time, maybe Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart are simply trying to get New York Knicks fans stirred up after Mikal Bridges’ latest tweet. Well, to be fair, Brunson has far more free time than Hart, who became a father to twin boys on the Knicks’ last day of the season.
The offseason is always a long one, but this offseason should be exceptionally long for New York fans as they wait to learn whether or not the front office is going to go all-in for a star. Two months of last summer were consumed by Donovan Mitchell rumors and then it all abruptly came to an unexpected end when the Cavaliers swooped in and got him.
Once a new NBA champion is crowned and the draft ends, the offseason will fully begin. Last year, the first big shock of the summer came on July 1 when the Timberwolves traded for Rudy Gobert.
A Knicks trade may or may not happen this offseason, but Brunson and Hart have already caught fans’ attention by quote tweeting a tweet from their former Villanova teammate.
Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart stir up Knicks Twitter with a tweet from Mikal Bridges
Mikal Bridges was sent to Brooklyn ahead of the trade deadline in the deal for Kevin Durant that shook the NBA world. He had a terrific end to the season, averaging 26.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists while shooting 47.5% from the field and 37.6% from three in 27 games. The 26-year-old has three seasons left on his current contract, but he’s drawn attention from around the league.
That’s why when Bridges tweeted this, fans began to wonder what it might mean.
Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart simply added more fuel to the Bridges trade fire. Bridges has already been connected to teams like the Trail Blazers and Jazz, but last week, The Athletic’s John Hollinger (subscription required) shut down the idea of a Bridges trade from his end. After saying that the Nets don’t have “much incentive” to deal Bridges, he wrote:
"Brooklyn’s likely best path forward is to muddle along with a Bridges-centric team, especially since he’s signed through 2026 to one of the league’s best contracts."
Anything can happen during the offseason, though. Perhaps the Nets will get an offer including multiple first-round picks that they can’t refuse for Bridges. Brooklyn is in interesting territory after losing James Harden, Kevin Durant, and Kyrie Irving all within a year, and there are a few different directions that the organization could decide to go in.
A lot would have to happen for Sean Marks and the Nets to willingly trade Bridges to the Knicks. New York’s assets won’t matter much in this case because the last thing that Brooklyn should want to do is send a budding star to its rival team.
But then again, maybe Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart know something about Mikal Bridges that Knicks fans don’t.
