The New York Knicks wrapped up a successful 2022-23 season that ended with a disappointing loss to the No. 8 Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. For a team that was supposed to be fighting to earn a spot in the play-in tournament, the Knicks did pretty well for themselves.

There are several former Knicks that did well this past season, too, including one player that left New York on bad terms. With the good comes the bad, and there were a couple of former players that weren’t able to accomplish much in the 2022-23 season.

Fell flat: Kemba Walker

New York signed Kemba Walker off waivers ahead of the 2021-22 season in what was supposed to be a homecoming move that would move the needle for the Knicks. However, he played in only 37 games and averaged 11.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. In late February of 2022, Walker and New York agreed that he’d be sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Kemba was traded to the Pistons on what was a whirlwind of a draft night for the Knicks. Ahead of the start of the regular season, Detroit waived Walker and ate $9.2 million in the process. He found his way to the Mavericks a little over a month later but appeared in only nine games before being waived again.

After leaving Dallas, the 33-year-old didn’t sign with another team. His future in the league is up in the air, but according to an interview that he did with The Athletic (subscription required) in March, he said that he wasn’t ready to stop playing yet.

It’s unfortunate that Kemba’s career has taken the turn that it has, especially after all that he gave to the Hornets in his eight seasons.
