The biggest news out of the draft lottery was of course that the Spurs won the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes. As for the New York Knicks, though, their chances of getting the No. 11 or No. 12 pick in the draft were quickly erased. As expected, the Mavericks were awarded the No. 10 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

As things stand, New York not only doesn’t have a first-round pick next month but doesn’t have a second-round pick as well. It was largely suspected that if the Knicks were to be given the No. 11 or No. 12 pick, it would’ve been packaged in a trade for a star. However, there’s still the chance that New York could trade into the draft if there’s a player that catches their eye.

There’s a current player in the league that should’ve already caught the Knicks’ eyes. With trade rumors swirling around, there seems to be at least some belief that Joel Embiid could be on the move. From the Sixers failing to make it to the Eastern Conference Finals, to the uncertainty regarding James Harden’s future, to Philadelphia firing Doc Rivers, trusting the process hasn’t worked out for the Sixers.

ESPN’s Zach Lowe and Tim MacMahon believe that New York has been monitoring what’s been unfolding in Philadelphia, which checks out because the Knicks would be able to put together one of the best packages in the league for Embiid if he were to become available.
