Knicks hilariously make Nick Wright eat his words with playoff success
The New York Knicks were supposed to be nothing more than a play-in team, but they’re still standing after the first round of the playoffs after a satisfying series win over Donovan Mitchell and the Cavaliers. Cleveland was one of the top teams in the East during the regular season and Mitchell was named an All-Star starter, but that didn’t matter in the playoffs.
New York had its fair share of ups and downs during the regular season as does every team, but after starting the season 10-13, the Knicks won eight straight games in December to push their record to 18-13. Strangely enough, the day after New York won its eighth straight game, Nick Wright saw it as his opportunity to bash the team.
The media not taking the Knicks seriously isn’t new for fans. Look at how the Jalen Brunson free agency signing was perceived. What was once labeled as an overpay has now been referred to as one of the best free agency signings ever. Nick Wright said on Dec. 21 that the Knicks weren’t a threat, and look at how that take has turned out.
Nick Wright was unsurprisingly wrong about the 2022-23 Knicks
The morning after the Knicks cruised past the Warriors to a 132-94 win, Nick Wright said:
"“Record this, Knicks media, and play it back never when I’m proven wrong. This Knicks team is a threat to no one in the playoffs and in six weeks we’ll be talking about are they going to make the playoffs.”"
Well, Wright was wrong and we are playing it back! Six weeks later, New York had a 28-25 record and shortly thereafter went on to win nine straight games. The Knicks finished the season with a 47-35 record, good enough for fifth place in the East. New York was enough of a threat to No. 4 Cleveland to eliminate the Cavaliers in the first round.
It wasn’t abnormal for Wright to talk down on the Knicks, but what was abnormal was to do so after they won their eighth consecutive game. Now, New York is riding a three-game win streak in the playoffs that will be put to the test in the second round against Miami.
Wright has since mentioned that he was wrong, which was the right thing to do, but I’m not so sure that Knicks fans want to see him at the Garden in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Ah, the New York Knicks — outing their doubters one day at a time.
