Derrick Rose has been a non-factor on the court for the Knicks. He’s been booted from Tom Thibodeau’s rotation and has instead been primarily acting as a leader for the young New York squad. It was thought that he would be traded ahead of the deadline to a contender so that he could compete for a ring, but that didn’t happen.

The 34-year-old has a $15.6 club option for 2023-24, and the Knicks shouldn’t think twice about moving on from Rose. It’d be incredibly difficult to justify paying a bench player nearly $16 million, especially with New York already being over the salary cap.

The Knicks should do everything that they can to offload salary during the summer, and regardless of how much Thibodeau and the front office love Rose, New York should let him walk. There will likely be several interested teams, so it would benefit both sides to move on, especially with the Knicks looking to trade for a star.

New York should want to curb spending under the new CBA, and letting Derrick Rose go would help them do that.
