Yesterday marked 12 years since the New York Knicks traded for Carmelo Anthony. Time really does fly. Melo spent seven seasons in NYC before signing with Oklahoma City in 2017. Since then, he’s hopped around the Western Conference.
Anthony signed with the Lakers ahead of the 2021-22 season with hopes of winning his first championship alongside his friend LeBron James. Thanks to a series of other moves made by Rob Pelinka, that season quickly turned into a disaster for Los Angeles. Melo averaged 13.3 points and shot 44.1% from the field and 37.5% from three in 69 games with the Lakers.
Here we are in 2022-23 with one-fourth of the season remaining, and Melo has still yet to be signed. There were rumors connecting him to teams like the Nets and Celtics, although nothing ever came of them.
As noted by AZCentral’s Jeremy Cluff, those rumors have started back up again, but this time they only involve the Suns thanks to comments from Kevin Durant and Chris Paul.
Will the Phoenix Suns sign Knicks legend Carmelo Anthony?
Two weeks ago, Phoenix shocked the NBA world (and thrilled Knicks fans) by trading for Kevin Durant in the middle of the night ahead of the deadline. KD recently advocated for Carmelo Anthony in an interview with Bally Sports.
Before the start of the 2022-23 season when KD was still in Brooklyn, New York Post’s Brian Lewis reported that the Nets signing Melo would “appease” Durant after his first trade request saga. Lewis wrote that Brooklyn signing Melo was a move that Durant had “wanted them to make.” So, it checks out that he’s being linked to the Suns again now that KD has made the move to Arizona.
Chris Paul, another longtime friend of Melo’s, also said a few weeks ago that he would like to see him back in the league.
After signing Terrence Ross for the remainder of the season, the Suns have one open roster spot. Phoenix gained one of the best scorers in the history of the game in Durant, but the team lost two quality shooters in Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson. It would make sense for the Suns to explore adding Melo to the roster and it goes without saying that the move would give him his best chance at winning a title.
Hopefully, Knicks fans haven’t already seen Melo play his final NBA game. Don’t let it end like this!
