Jaylen Brown had an opportunity to give the Celtics the one-point lead with 7.1 seconds left to play in overtime, but instead, the 26-year-old guard missed not one free throw, but two, as the New York Knicks went on to win, 120-117.

Thanks to Julius Randle, Brown’s failure to come up clutch will live on in the minds of not just Knicks fans, but NBA fans. After Brown missed the second free throw, Randle glanced over at Brown with a grin on his face as he laughed, but Brown didn’t make eye contact with him.

Similar to when Luka Doncic smiled at Devin Booker, Randle grinning at Brown will be a meme that will go down in the NBA meme hall of fame.

Jaylen Brown responds to Julius Randle interaction after missing clutch free throws

With Jaylen Brown on the podium after the game, a reporter said that it looked as if Julius Randle said something to him after he missed both free throws and he asked what the exchange between the two was. Here’s what Brown had to say:

“Um, I’m not sure. I’m not sure what Julius said. I’m sure he was happy to get a win.”

Right after the game ended, Randle was asked if he said anything to Brown. Randle said:

“Naw, man. He just missed them. He’s a great player. Those are tough shots, especially at the end of the game. It’s a miss or make league, I’m happy it was on our side today.”

Although Brown was clearly disappointed, he didn’t have anything bad to say about Randle, who called Brown a great player. That’s a sign of respect between two of the top players in the Eastern Conference this season.

As Randle said, the two free throws that Brown missed are tough shots. Randle knows that, especially since he’s been in Brown’s shoes before. For instance, over four years ago, Randle missed a free throw against Indiana that would’ve tied the game. And this season alone, the Knicks have fallen apart in crunch time and watched what should’ve been wins turn into losses, which is what almost happened on Thursday night against the Celtics.

New York and Boston will play one another two more times this season, with the next matchup taking place on Feb. 27 at MSG. That’s a game that fans need to be sure to have circled on their calendar. Will Jaylen Brown get his revenge or will Julius Randle be the one to get the last laugh again?
