New York Knicks fans, we’ve finally made it to the final full month before the start of the 2022-23 season. New York’s had a solid offseason thus far, but the team could still end up making the biggest move of the summer with a Donovan Mitchell trade.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported last week that the Utah Jazz are believed to want a trade to happen before the start of training camp, which will begin later this month. The Jazz are reportedly willing to hold onto Mitchell into the start of the 2022-23 season, but that’s a move that could end up harming the team.

Although Utah didn’t meet Leon Rose’s deadline of Monday night to come to an agreement or else an RJ Barrett extension would happen, the Knicks and Jazz can still make a trade. The talks had reportedly been centered around Barrett, and although the poison pill provision is now in effect, he could still be part of a deal.

At this point, the majority of Knicks fans seem to want the Donovan Mitchell trade saga to finally come to an end with the three-time All-Star landing in New York. Here are three reasons why Mitchell being traded to the Knicks is still the most likely outcome.

3 reasons why Donovan Mitchell will likely be traded to the Knicks

3: A trade would benefit both teams

The Knicks have been waiting for a star to arrive in New York and Utah has a star that it needs to get rid of so that the team’s rebuilding phase can officially start. Given what the Knicks have to offer, it seems like this trade is a no-brainer, right? Technically, yes, but so far, things have been far from simple.

Danny Ainge is known for the trades that he’s made with the Celtics, and now the Jazz. A week ago, Utah traded Patrick Beverley to the Los Angeles Lakers for Talen Horton-Tucker and Stanley Johnson, but Ainge’s biggest trade with the Jazz happened in early July when Rudy Gobert was sent to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Utah’s now without one of its main stars, which means that if a Mitchell trade happens, the Jazz will enter a rebuilding period.

A Mitchell trade would allow for Utah to move on and start preparing for the future, and it’d also mean that New York would be closer to being a contender.
