It feels like nearly every player in the NBA has spent time with the New York Knicks, and one of those players in particular, Austin Rivers, recently opened up about how he wishes that things would’ve worked out in New York. But on the other hand is Bobby Portis, who didn’t enjoy his one-year stint on the Knicks.

Only two full seasons have been played since Portis left New York, but since then, he’s won a ring with the Milwaukee Bucks. The 27-year-old was a free agent this offseason, but he re-signed with Milwaukee on a four-year, $49 million deal.

Portis’ career began with the Chicago Bulls in 2015, where he spent three and a half seasons before being traded to the Washington Wizards, where he played in 28 games in 2018-19. From there, he spent the 2019-20 season in New York. It’s safe to say that he found his footing with the Bucks after he decided to leave the Knicks in 2020.

And in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated’s Ashley Moss, Portis initially said that out of his three former teams, he’d choose to go back to the Knicks.

After that was posted on Twitter, some Knicks fans chimed in and said that they’d like to see Portis back on the team. But two days later, Portis clarified his response in a tweet of his own.

Sheesh, Bobby. Perhaps he could’ve left that part out.

That year, Portis averaged 10.1 points (the fourth most on the team behind Marcus Morris Sr., Julius Randle, and RJ Barrett) and 5.1 rebounds in 66 games (five starts) while shooting 45% from the floor and 35.8% from the 3-point line. New York finished 12th in the East with a 21-45 record, so Portis clearly wasn’t the only person that was miserable at the time.

The following season, the Knicks made it to the playoffs for the first time since the 2012-13 season, but Portis won a championship with Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks, so it’s evident that he had more success than New York did. He was sure to remind a Knicks fan of that, too.

As a former Knick, it’s good to see Bobby do well. Even though he called his stint in New York “the most miserable year” of his career, he also said that he’s thankful for it because it led him to a championship team.

At least now, Knicks fans have a lot to look forward to in the 2022-23 season, and there’s still a potential trade that could be happening before then. It’s time for New York to enjoy some success of its own.

And oh yeah, one thing’s for sure, NYC is a far better place to be than… Wisconsin.
