Here’s how Russell Westbrook could be key to a Donovan Mitchell-Knicks trade
Why would the Utah Jazz do this?
To put it short, the Utah Jazz would do this trade for the main prize of the 2023 draft… Victor Wembanyama.
They cannot afford to win games this coming season if they want to have a chance at Wembanyama. To ensure that games are not won, they should not take back players that may lead them to a few more wins than desired. That’s why Julius Randle never really made much sense because no matter what, he is still a former All-Star that led New York to the playoffs in 2021.
The Jazz would get one year of Russell Westbrook, where he could absorb all the shots that will be available once trading both Mitchell and Bogdanovic. The Jazz wouldn’t win a lot of games, but the team would be entertaining to watch.
Cam Reddish and Obi Toppin would fit perfectly with a fast offense led by Westbrook. And by perfectly, I mean athletically and aesthetically, but not resulting in wins. But that is exactly what Utah would want: one year of SportsCenter highlights and losses.
The five draft picks would add to the already plentiful array of draft picks from trading Rudy Gobert to the Timberwolves. This seems like the best-case scenario for the Jazz rather than trying to figure out what to do with players who are on the wrong timeline of the team.
What is the point of having a rebuilding team if you are not setting up your team for a chance at a generational talent? Danny Ainge needs to make some tough decisions.
