2022 NBA Mock Draft: What is going to happen on June 23?
By Mark Wessol
At No. 6, I have the Indiana Pacers selecting forward Keegan Murray out of Iowa. This pick seems like it will be the “replacement” for Domantas Sabonis.
Murray is an interesting player to me. He gets a lot of buzz around him and I get that. He can score the heck out of the ball and has the shooting necessary to be a modern-day stretch 4. But purely from the eye test, and this may be naive of me, he never has wowed me. And maybe that is a good thing, but his lack of athleticism still worries me.
Having a young promising point guard in Tyrese Haliburton certainly will help Murray find his feet early on, but I’m currently on the side of seeing him as strictly a role player.
I think he will have a hard time translating his college game to the NBA, where he: A. Won’t be “the guy” and B. He won’t be able to shoot over guys like he did at Iowa.
While I may sound critical of Murray, I can’t ignore that he was fourth in the nation in scoring at Iowa and averaged nearly 9 rebounds a game, which on paper looks like a lottery pick. So, in essence, I can see why a team would (in my opinion) reach on the young forward.
This is another draft pick I see another team trading up for and it would make sense for Portland. The Trail Blazers should be going after immediate roster improvement because they don’t have much time to waste with Damian Lillard only getting older.
Maybe a team like the Washington Wizards with some sort of Bradley Beal trade move up to this spot, or even our very own Knicks. But regardless of who is selecting, I have Dyson Daniels getting snatched up.
Daniels is one of my favorite prospects in this year’s class, he is a matchup nightmare and impacts both sides of the ball. He is a 6’6” guard who loves to be a playmaker, he gets his teammates involved, and attacks the basket.
He played with the NBA G League Ignite team last year, posting 11.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game.
He won’t shoot the lights out, but he has shown improvement in that aspect and makes up for it by finding others who can knock that shot down.
His game reminds me a bit of Tyrese Haliburton, and if New York is in a position to select him, I am praying that it happens.
Daniels has an extremely high floor and even higher ceiling. Watch to see him make an immediate impact on whatever team is lucky enough to get him.
