2: Johnny Davis, Guard, Wisconsin

Johnny Davis had a breakout season in 2021-22 after playing as a backup in his previous year with Wisconsin. He took over as the team’s leading scorer, averaging 19.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.

While he connected on just 43% of his looks from the field and 31% from three, it’s more of an indictment of the talent surrounding Davis than it is of his actual shooting ability. Wisconsin ranked 279th and 319th amongst NCAA programs in field goal percentage and three-point percentage, respectively.

The team’s second-leading scorer shot just 38% from the field, and their third-leading scorer was the starting center who averaged just 11.4 points per game. No other teammate scored in double figures on a nightly basis.

It’s a testament to Davis’ scoring talent and leadership that the team finished with a record of 25-8. It’s also worth noting that he’s a career 78% free throw shooter and that he hit 39% of his threes as a freshman. It isn’t hard to imagine his efficiency increasing in a smaller role.

Davis is a relentless attacker who has also displayed an array of moves to generate his favorite shot, a pull-up mid-range jumper. It’s what has led many draft experts to use Milwaukee Bucks star Khris Middleton as his pro comparison.

Davis’ combination of volume scoring and leadership abilities should make him an ideal fit with a Knicks team that struggled mightily with shot creation last season. He’s met with head coach Tom Thibodeau, so he’s definitely on New York’s radar. It’s easy to see why.
