Spike Lee continues to confuse Knicks fans with support of Celtics at NBA Finals
Spike Lee’s already on thin ice with the New York Knicks fanbase and not just because he was sitting courtside for Game 3 of the Brooklyn Nets/Boston Celtics first-round playoff series at Barclays Center, but because he was actively cheering for Brooklyn.
We know that the Nets were swept by the Celtics a few days after that and now, Boston’s made its way to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2010.
Game 1 between the Celtics and Golden State Warriors took place on Thursday night at the Chase Center in San Francisco, and guess who was there? None other than Spike. However, that’s not surprising because although the Knicks haven’t been to the NBA Finals since 1999, it’s the biggest basketball event of the year.
What Spike did at halftime, though, was enough to raise some eyebrows. After the Brooklyn native was cheering against Boston in the playoffs a month ago, he made sure to wish Celtics head coach Ime Udoka good luck at the half.
Knicks “superfan” Spike Lee spotted wishing Celtics coach good luck at NBA Finals
After Steph Curry exploded for 21 points in the first quarter, Boston held a two-point lead over Golden State at the half, 56-54. The Warriors are known as a third-quarter team, which is how they outscored the Celtics 38-24, but Boston came up huge to outscore Golden State 40-16 in the fourth quarter for the 120-108 win.
That’s not the result that New York fans were hoping for. This goes without saying, but the lesser of the two evils between the Celtics and the Warriors is undoubtedly the Warriors. And ironically enough, it was RJ Barrett who helped set Boston on the path that led to the NBA Finals.
The Knicks have done more than enough for the Celtics and there shouldn’t be a single fan who wants Boston to win its 18th championship. That includes you, Spike.
Admittedly, it’s hard to not be jealous of the success that Udoka has had with the Celtics in his first year as a head coach in the NBA. And it’s also hilarious that Udoka was on the Nets staff in 2020-21 as an assistant coach. But to go as far to wish Udoka and Boston luck? Eh, no.
Come on, Spike, you should know better than that.
