Elfrid Payton went from starting in all 63 games that he played in for the Knicks last season to starting in 1 out of the 50 contests that he played in for the Phoenix Suns during the 2021-22 regular season.

Payton averaged 3 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 2 assists while shooting 38.3% from the field and 22.2% from beyond the arc (which somehow isn’t a career-low).

The 28-year-old wasn’t the answer to New York’s need at point guard and that led to the Knicks not re-signing him when he was a free agent last offseason. Instead, he signed a one-year deal with Phoenix.

Payton might be the least popular former Knicks player on this list, although he could be the one to win a ring if Phoenix can find a way to overcome Dallas after losing two straight games.

The guard would get a ring, but so far he’s only played in a total of two minutes. That happened in the first round against New Orleans in a 118-103 loss in which Payton had 2 points and 1 assist.

It’s likely that Payton will be on the move again this summer, and possibly fresh off a championship, but he shouldn’t expect a reunion with New York.
