4: Ricky Rubio

Ricky Rubio tore his ACL at the end of December and therefore had to miss the rest of the 2021-22 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. It should go without saying that the Knicks shouldn’t be in pursuit of a 31-year-old who’s dealing with that type of injury.

In the 34 games that Rubio did play in for the Cavaliers this past year, he averaged 13.1 points, 6.6 assists, and 4.1 rebounds. He shot 36.3% from the floor and 33.9% from the 3-point line. In February, he was traded to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Caris LeVert.

Rubio spent his first six seasons in the league with the Timberwolves but has hopped around from five teams since then, including a reunion in Minnesota.

Since Rubio is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, there’s a chance that he could leave Indiana without having played in a game for the Pacers.

The expectation is that he’ll be back on the court midway through the 2022-23 season, but that isn’t a guarantee. There have been rumors that he could re-sign with Cleveland, which would make sense. A stint in New York seems to be out of the cards for Rubio, and for good reason.

The Knicks aren’t in a tough enough spot to sign a backup point guard who won’t be available in time for opening night.

Verdict: Pass
