6: Dennis Schroder

Dennis Schroder passed up a four-year, $84 million extension with the Los Angeles Lakers last summer and instead chose to sign with the Boston Celtics on a one-year, $5.9 million deal. He was hoping that by doing so he’d be offered a large sum of money in free agency this summer, but that isn’t going to happen.

The 28-year-old was traded to the Rockets in February, so he didn’t get the chance to be part of the Boston Celtics’ playoff run. In retrospect, Schroder should’ve stayed in Los Angeles because while he’ll garner attention as an unrestricted free agent, he won’t be making around $20 million annually.

In the 29 games that Schroder played in for the Celtics before being traded, he averaged 14.4 points, 4.2 assists, and 3.3 rebounds. He shot 44% from the floor and 34.9% from the 3-point line.

Schroder wouldn’t be a bad backup point guard option, but as it’s been mentioned, New York doesn’t need another backup. He’d serve the same purpose as Rose and would take up space on the bench. Schroder has the potential to be valuable elsewhere, but not with the Knicks.

The last thing that the front office needs to do is go out and sign yet another veteran point guard, as the signing of Kemba Walker is still fresh on the minds of many New York fans.

Verdict: Pass
