2: Wesley Matthews
Similar to House, Wesley Matthews only spent a few games with the Knicks back in 2019 as a throw-in from the Kristaps Porzingis trade.
Still, it would be beneficial for New York to bring him back in a veteran bench role who could occasionally contribute minutes if players get hurt. The veteran shooting guard is a career 38% 3-point marksman and has been to the playoffs on eight separate occasions.
He could provide a steady mentorship role for the young players such as rising sharpshooter Quentin Grimes.
At 35-years-old, Matthews has also shown that he can still rise to the occasion when called upon. In six games as a starter this postseason with the Milwaukee Bucks, he’s shooting 43.8% from the field and 40.7% from behind the arc.
Given his age and small role, bringing Matthews in as a bench option would be extremely inexpensive and could allow the front office more flexibility to work on re-signing Mitchell Robinson when he hits unrestricted free agency.
As the Knicks attempt to retool to return to the postseason, adding a battle-tested veteran with 59 games of playoff experience could help provide the culture needed both on and off the court to get back to where they were in 2021.
