The New York Knicks have been in search of a young star who wants to be part of the franchise long-term. At last, it seems as if they’ve found what they’ve been looking for in 2019 first-round draft pick RJ Barrett.

Since the start of 2022, he’s by far been the most consistent player for New York. In 41 games, he’s averaging 23.6 points, 6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. For reference, Julius Randle (who’s out for the season), averaged 20.9 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 5.3 assists in 37 contests since the start of the year.

After his first All-Star nod last season, Randle signed a four-year, $170 million extension with New York that’s yet to go into effect. He was supposed to be the face of the Knicks moving forward, but now his future with the team is up in the air.

That’s why New York fans have latched onto Barrett. At the end of 2021, he texted his trainer Drew Hanlen to let him know that he was going to take over (subscription required), and that’s exactly what he’s done. It shouldn’t even be a question as to if the 21-year-old deserves a maximum rookie extension.

On Tuesday, Barrett was asked about the pressure that comes along with suiting up for the Knicks and playing in a big market. Clearly, it doesn’t bother him, as he reaffirmed the fact that he has what it takes to lead the franchise.

RJ Barrett welcomes the ‘pressure’ that comes along with playing for the New York Knicks.

Why was Barrett asked that specific question? Most likely because of how Randle’s season has gone. Last week, Randle denied that he requested a trade and said that he still wants to call New York his home.

Given his drop in performance and visible attitude change, him playing for a team in a market like New York City’s been called into question. The fans at Madison Square Garden are some of the best in the NBA, but they won’t hesitate to call you out as soon as you start to slip up. That’s been the case with Randle.

In the span of a few months, Barrett’s taken Randle’s place in the spotlight. He’s arrived on the scene and his numbers prove that.

Barrett’s averaging 20 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3 assists in the 70 games that he’s played in this season. He’s had 11 30+ point games, with nine of those taking place in 2022 alone.

With the year coming to a close for the Knicks, the offseason could bring a lot of change. The possibility of Randle being traded to a new team isn’t out of the question. That’d mean that the keys to New York would officially be handed over to Barrett. If that happens, he’ll be ready.
